Laboratory for Experimental Brain Research
Our research is focused on identifying cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to circuit remodeling in the postischemic brain. In particular, we are interested in how the activation of dopamine signaling cascades modulates processes of adaptive neuronal plasticity. Identifying specific dopamine-driven targets may provide candidates for a recovery-enhancing adjuvant pharmacological treatment in combination with rehabilitative training in stroke patients.
In our studies, we use advanced in vivo approaches and minimally-invasive methods such as 2-Photon laser scanning microscopy and functional imaging (fcOIS). Other methods are neuronal tracing in combination with pharmacological treatments and specific training protocols (mimicking stroke rehabilitation) in established preclinical stroke models.
Understanding the dynamics of cellular and subcellular mechanisms preventing neurodegeneration following acute brain injury.
Providing new knowledge on the role of dopamine signaling in processes of neuronal plasticity and neurodegeneration.
Transferring this knowledge and candidate drugs into clinical development.
Modulation of dopamine-driven cascades that contribute to plasticity processes might be exploited for the development of treatments that enhance stroke recovery and prevent secondary neurodegeneration. Availability of such therapies will significantly reduce sequelae in stroke patients and foster re-integration into their social environment and society.
How our research contributes to the goals of MultiPark
We study adaptive mechanisms of plasticity modulated by dopamine signaling. These mechanisms are potential targets for disease-modifying/plasticity-enhancing treatments in acute injury models to prevent secondary neurodegeneration. We contribute to the strategic plan of Multipark creating new therapeutic approaches for prevention, disease modification, and management of unmet medical needs. Our research addresses the aim of MultiPark's working group 4.
