Cognitive Disorder Research Unit

Our research aims to uncover early mechanisms and biomarkers involved in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Our strategy is to examine how risk factors, including stress, inflammation, metabolic disturbances, and amyloidogenesis, affect cellular integrity in the brain and retina.

We use a translational approach in which our hypotheses are built upon postmortem brain and retina observations, followed by in vitro experiments and analyses of human CSF and plasma. This approach has revealed several disease-related mechanisms, including altered glycogen metabolism, toxicity of various amyloid peptide aggregation forms, and the secretion of pathology-specific molecules that may support future diagnostics and treatments.

Our research will clarify disease-driving mechanisms in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia disorders, strengthening MultiPark’s goal of understanding neurodegeneration. By identifying mechanism-linked biomarkers, we contribute to earlier and more accurate diagnostics. These insights also highlight new therapeutic targets, supporting the development of individualized, disease-modifying interventions that align with MultiPark’s mission to improve treatment across disease stages.
