PET imaging in neurodegenerative diseases
We use positron emission tomography to elucidate disease mechanisms, monitor disease progression, and improve diagnosis in neurodegenerative disorders. Our group leads the PET imaging program within the BioFINDER studies, integrating tau PET, amyloid PET, dopamine transporter imaging, and cardiac sympathetic nervous system imaging. These modalities are combined with extensive biomarker profiling, genomics, cognitive assessments, and clinical data. We are also evaluating PET radioligands targeting α-synuclein. In addition to BioFINDER, we contribute to the imaging program of the STEM-PD trial investigating stem cell transplantation for Parkinson’s disease.
The BioFINDER study was among the first worldwide to implement tau PET, generating pivotal evidence for its high diagnostic accuracy in Alzheimer’s disease. Our work has also validated leading blood-based biomarkers and advanced the understanding of disease mechanisms in both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. These contributions directly support MultiPark’s aims to understand, diagnose, and ultimately treat neurodegenerative diseases.
