Sarah Sperling is the Executive Director of the Parkinson Study Group (PSG). She holds a Bachelor's degree in Marketing from The College of New Jersey and has brought a wealth of business experience to the PSG since joining in 2020. Sarah specializes in breathing new life into businesses, seeing them in a fresh light, helping her to modernize and streamline their operations. With her passion for business development and brand growth, Sarah has played a pivotal role in elevating PSG’s presence in the Parkinson’s research community. Through strategic collaboration with industry partners, foundations, and leading researchers, the PSG has continued to flourish into a thriving clinical trial network. In addition to advancing research, Sarah has spearheaded the growth of PSG’s mentorship initiatives, including the Coordinator Visiting Mentorship Program and the Women in Neurology Initiative. Sarah is deeply inspired by the dedication and compassion of those working in Parkinson’s research and feels privileged to contribute to the ongoing progress in the field.
Dr. Joohi Jimenez-Shahed is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Medical Director, Movement Disorders Neuromodulation and Brain Circuit Therapeutics. After completing her undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis, she received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and completed Neurology residency training at Duke University Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship in Movement Disorders at the Parkinson’s Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinical (PDCMDC) at BCM. Her research investigates the neurophysiologic features of movement disorders recorded during deep brain stimulation (DBS), the application of wearables and digital health technologies, and health outcomes research.
Dr. Jimenez-Shahed is Co-Chair of the Executive Committee of the Parkinson Study Group (PSG), where she previously served as Chair of the Mentorship Committee and of the Functional Neurosurgical Working Group. She currently serves as co-chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Tourette Association of America, on the Board of the International Association of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, and on the Council of the Deep Brain Stimulation Society. She recently completed a term as Chair of the Science Advisory Board of the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson's and previously chaired the Medical Advisory Board for the Houston Area Parkinson Society.
She is an investigator with the Huntington Study Group, Dystonia Coalition and TSA International Database of DBS Studies in Tourette syndrome. She has served as Principal Investigator for industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trials and has authored several papers and book chapters.
Dr. Jimenez-Shahed is the recipient of the Roy H. Cullen Quality of Life Award (Houston Area Parkinson Society), the Rising Star Clinician Award (BCM), the Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching and Evaluation (BCM) and the Healthcare Heroes Award for Outstanding Health Care Practitioner (Houston Business Journal). She was recognized as a Woman of Excellence at BCM and is a 2018 graduate of the inaugural Women Leading in Neurology program of the American Academy of Neurology.
